How Much Does a Tattoo Cost in Bali?

If you are planning a tattoo during your Bali trip, the first question is almost always the same: what will it actually cost? The honest answer is that price depends on your design, not on a fixed Bali rate card. But there are real factors behind every quote, and understanding them means you can budget properly and spot a quote that is too good to be true.

What Determines the Price of a Tattoo

Four things drive cost, in roughly this order of impact:

  • Size. A larger surface area takes more time and more ink. This is the single biggest factor.
  • Complexity and detail. Fine line work, realism gradients and intricate geometric patterns demand more precision per square centimetre than a bold traditional outline.
  • Placement. Curved, bony or awkward areas such as ribs, hands or the sternum are slower to work on than a forearm or thigh.
  • Time. Most studios, including ours, price primarily on the time a piece takes rather than a flat per-piece rate.

Why Studios Charge a Minimum

At Felicidad, pricing starts at a minimum of 1 million IDR for small, simple designs. Clients sometimes ask why a tiny tattoo cannot cost proportionally less. The answer is that the cost is not in the ink — it is in the setup.

Every procedure, regardless of size, requires a freshly sterilised workstation, a new sterile needle cartridge, single-use ink caps, barriers, gloves and a full surface disinfection protocol. That standard does not scale down for a small piece. A studio that drops below its minimum for a small design is usually cutting the setup, not the artistry.

What a Quote Should Include

When you request a price, a professional studio should give you a clear figure that covers the full session. Watch for these:

  • Consultation and design work
  • All sterile consumables and equipment
  • Aftercare guidance and a contact channel for healing questions
  • Whether a touch-up is included, and within what timeframe

We include one complimentary touch-up within three months of your appointment, provided you follow the aftercare instructions we give you.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

Vague enquiries get vague quotes. To get a number you can actually budget against, send the studio:

  1. A reference image or sketch, even a rough one
  2. Your preferred placement
  3. An approximate size in centimetres
  4. Any style preferences — fine line, black and grey, traditional, geometric

With those four things, an experienced artist can give you a realistic estimate and tell you how long the session will take.

Why the Cheapest Quote Is Rarely the Cheapest Tattoo

Bali has a wide range of studios and a correspondingly wide range of prices. It is worth understanding what a low price usually means in practice.

Sterile single-use equipment, medical-grade disinfectants and pigment that meets European REACH safety standards all cost money. A studio quoting far below the market is either reducing its consumable standards, reducing the time spent on your piece, or both. Removing a tattoo costs significantly more than getting it done properly the first time — and a cover-up is constrained by the original work.

This does not mean the most expensive studio is the best. It means the right question is not “who is cheapest” but “what exactly is included in this price.”

Planning Your Budget Around Your Trip

If you are tattooing while travelling, add two things to your budget beyond the tattoo itself: aftercare supplies such as sterile saline and a fragrance-free moisturiser, and time. You will need to keep the area out of pools and the ocean for at least two weeks, which is worth factoring into how you plan the rest of your holiday.

Our artists will talk you through healing timelines for your specific placement before you commit to a date.
